Sustainable Reuse of Batteries

Old batteries must be recycled. This requirement is set out in various directives, including the EU Battery Directive. But by no means does a battery that is no longer good enough for use in an electric vehicle become electrical waste needing to be broken down into its original raw materials.

After all, with a capacity of 70 to 80 percent, the former traction batteries are still perfectly suitable for reuse, as electricity storage systems for example. Not just in large-scale systems, but also in the home, to supplement the domestic photovoltaic system.

However, there are a number of challenges to overcome: To what extent can the battery be dismantled, which parts can really be reused, and what can be done to increase the appeal of this kind of "second-life concept"?

EDAG has joined forces with partners to develop a concept for a sustainable, attractively designed storage system. To find out more about the decisions that had to be made during the development process, the properties of the storage system and how much CO2 this type of system saves compared to a newly produced solution, see our white paper "Batteries: Second Life instead of End of Life", which can be downloaded here.
